“Leaky Gut” Linked to Faster Biological Aging

Disrupted gut health could lead to increased gut permeability and accelerated biological aging – where a person's body ages faster than their chronological years – a recent study has found. This, in turn, may raise the risk of age-related health issues like cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders.

Though not currently an accepted medical diagnosis, leaky gut is a term that usually refers to the intestines becoming more permeable over time, which in theory would allow toxins and pathogens to “leak” into the bloodstream. It's thought to stem from imbalances in the gut microbiome and other types of gut damage.

The study specifically looked at the effects of viral damage to gut health from chronic HIV infection. Using advanced analysis methods on blood and intestinal tissue samples, researchers found a significant link between disrupted gut microbiomes, increased intestinal permeability (leaky gut), and faster biological aging.

“More investigation is needed to fully understand the underlying causes and potential impacts of our findings,” said Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Mohsen, lead study author. “Moreover, there’s a crucial need to create strategies to prevent intestinal dysbiosis and gut leakiness and to determine how these strategies could affect an individual’s biological age.”

Cinnamon May Lower Blood Sugar Levels, Combat Prediabetes

Taking a cinnamon supplement daily may help lower blood sugar levels in people with prediabetes, a new research study has found. The supplement also resulted in lower glucose peaks, which suggests better overall blood sugar control.

Previous studies have shown that cinnamon – one of the most popular spices in the world – possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Some research has also suggested that it has antidiabetic properties, but previous trials on cinnamon and blood sugar have had mixed results.

The latest study involved 18 overweight adults with prediabetes who were randomly assigned to take 4 g of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii) or a placebo daily for 4 weeks before switching groups for an additional 4 weeks. A continuous glucose monitoring device was used to measure blood sugar levels for each participant.

Participants taking the cinnamon supplement consistently had lower blood sugar levels. However, one drawback was that the placebo was made of maltodextrin, a substance that may raise blood sugar, potentially affecting the results. Still, further research is warranted to discover the specific ways cinnamon could help combat prediabetes. 40% Now Low in This Brain and Energy Essential

Did you know that up to 40% of the U.S. population may be low on vitamin B12 – and even several others of the 8 essential B vitamins?

That number can shoot even higher for plant-based eaters and older adults, which is alarming because B12 and the other B vitamins are critical for your brain health, energy, mood, longevity, skin, joints, heart, and much more. This is why many leading experts now recommend supplementing with a complete B complex – especially if you are in your middle years or beyond.

Unfortunately, most options on the market are loaded with synthetic and potentially toxic ingredients. That’s why Purity Woods decided to create their new Organic B Complete formula that is fully USDA Certified Organic and made from whole food sources (like beets and guava). This exceptional supplement contains a proper balance of all 8 essential B vitamins, including a safe and effective 25 mcg of natural-sourced vitamin B12. No toxins, animal-based ingredients, dairy, gluten, or GMOs.

8 Amazing Benefits of Sulforaphane, A Cancer-Fighting Nutrient

Sulforaphane is a natural plant compound found largely in cruciferous vegetables. Research has shown that it possesses a number of powerful health benefits, including an ability to fight inflammation, support detoxification, and potentially combat cancer. Sulforaphane may also protect brain health, benefit heart health, and even slow the aging process, promoting longevity. Broccoli sprouts are the best source of sulforaphane, and you can see tips for how to activate it right here → (More)

Sleep May Help Preserve Complex Memories

If you needed yet another reason to make sleep a priority, here it is: A recent study found that sleep appears to help the brain consolidate memories with several components, meaning it improves the ability to recall complex events. This seems to happen because of bursts of brain activity that only occur during sleep and could help explain why other recent studies have found that sleep deprivation may increase the risk of dementia. Too Much Protein Could Increase Atherosclerosis Risk

Protein is an essential macronutrient needed for muscle health and much more. However, some new research has found that consuming over 22% of daily calories from protein could lead to increased levels of atherosclerotic plaque formation. This, in turn, may raise the risk of atherosclerosis – stiff, hardened arteries – but it should be noted that much of the information from this study came from cell research and still needs confirmation from quality human studies. Vitamin B3 May Improve Outcomes for Liver Disease

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing health problem with an estimated prevalence of nearly 48% in the US. Diet and lifestyle changes remain the best option for improving liver health, and a recent study has found that vitamin B3 (also known as niacin) may be particularly helpful for those who already have liver disease. Higher levels of this nutrient – found in foods like fish, meat, and bananas – was linked to a lower risk of death from any cause for those with NAFLD. (More)

10 “Health” Foods You May Want to Rethink

Healthy eating can be a challenge, especially when so-called health foods aren't as great as they first appear. Yogurt, for example, is filled with gut-boosting probiotics, but many brands cancel out this benefit by adding tons of sugar and other additives. Salmon, though generally healthy, can be filled with mercury and antibiotics when farm-raised, while egg substitutes usually contain more chemicals than natural whole eggs. Cereal bars, microwave popcorn, and diet soda also miss the mark, no matter what the marketing on the label says. (More)
